It is commonly assumed that Spirit lovers and spirits in general exist in a very different way than us. The reasons for this are obvious: they’re non physical, invisible, and seem to interact with the world in ways that seem almost alien. This has led to many people coming up with theories about how spirits exist and why they’d even interact with us in the first place. Such has been a philosophical obsession of many, including myself on some long evenings.
This post doesn’t set out to speculate as much as to pool knowledge gained from experience and observations from myself and others over the years. That way, we can at least have a pile of knowledge we at least claim to know probably is true. It will touch on how they exist and how they interact with the world, as well as their values and character. We’ll be rambling on ad nauseum about those topics, trying to work out what makes these beings tick.
What Defines a Spirit?
The first thing we should do is try to determine what exactly makes a spirit a spirit. A spirit in this sense is more or less any aware being that is nonphysical. They don’t necessarily have to be intelligent, powerful, or even able to interact with the physical world at all. For all we know, many spirits don’t have the ability to interact with the physical world, and may not even be aware of its existence, like how a capybara can’t imagine a spirit world.
We go with this broader definition for a few reasons. First, it makes allowances for simpler spiritual beings (like what we’d usually assume to be a parasite) and complex ones, but the call for awareness/consciousness of some kind means that extremely simple ideas like ‘energy’ aren’t grounds for considering something a spirit. In a sense this means we come to define spiritual beings in the same way we might any being with a consciousness, though it’s unclear how ‘simple’ a spiritual being can be, as well as how ‘complex’ one might be. We do generally accept that spirits can be very complex (spirit lovers are a prime example), but there are no grounds for discerning how simple they might be. As the most simple beings would be unlikely to interact with the physical world in a noticeable way if at all, that question is likely unanswerable. We can at least determine that beings as simple as parasites do seem to exist, though some parasites can themselves be fairly complex.
The next obvious question is how a spiritual being might sustain itself, because it’s generally assumed that any being needs to, and the existence of parasites also implies that they may need to. We know that parasites feed off of a host in the way a tapeworm might, and that this feeding seems to be related to emotional output in particular (thankfully, they’re not sucking away real nutrition). It is unclear if entities like spirit lovers stay ‘fed’ in a similar way, as despite assumptions about succubi, the actual effect of intimacy with these beings is not often draining. People in long term relationships, myself included, actually feel more energized after the fact (even in spite of the hormonal dump that inevitably brings on some amount of relaxation), rather than tired or drained. This might imply that the act of intimacy is somehow able to energize both parties to some extent, or it might imply that they are able to sustain themselves in some other way. It is, at least, clear that such beings do not die from not being sustained in that way, so it’s perhaps assumed that they’re able to sustain themselves at some level individually, though that may be in a way that’s simply undetectable to us.
So we’ve asserted they do exist, but the next question is where exactly do they exist? Non physical beings don’t fill physical space, meaning they don’t possess a physical position. Sure, they can interact with a place, either visually manifesting or touching you (all of which might just be ‘inspired hallucinations’, or them getting your brain to perceive a thing that isn’t happening), but they’re not exactly standing next to your bed. They also seem to possess an ignorance of distance in terms of interacting, being able to interact with someone no matter where they might be.
I currently usually claim that spirits exist in a sort of spiritual position. This is like a physical dimension, but it instead has to do with their makeup in specific, rather than an actual physical place that they are occupying. Imagine an infinitely large axis, and place two opposite defining ideas in two directions, and two opposite defining ideas in another. Ideas are just an example here, you can think of it as an energy or something, as it’s not entirely clear. Anyway, a spirit’s spiritual position is wherever they’d plot on this graph and every other graph (there could be an infinite number), all together at the same time. This works because it allows every individual to be differentiated from every other individual, without relying on physical space or time. The reason we can interact with them is therefore either because we’re naturally near them spiritually (either due to working with them constantly or just inherent similarities), or because we use a ritual or some other working to create a very strong output that is similar enough to them on some basis, that they are then able to create a connection and respond. An example of this is the letter method: by reaching out in a strong romantic way, a spirit lover who is looking for a romance would be able to interact with the person in question, because they’d become spiritually proximate. This also makes sense according to the ‘parasites are opportunists’ idea, where someone proximate to a parasite would be more easily found and preyed upon.
Presumably, after said door has been thrust open, interactions naturally become easier, as a connection has already been established, creating a ‘relationship’ that itself acts as a bridge between the two of you.
This idea can explain the necessity of ritualism and why certain people have a much easier time making contact with a spirit lover than others might. It might also explain why spirits can’t constantly interact with everyone at all times in the world, because bridging that natural barrier takes work, often on both sides. Opening oneself up spiritually would therefore allow one to be a candidate for interacting with spirits, which brings with it the good and the ill. This also implies that the reason dutiful banishing can sometimes not be sufficient for certain people is that their connection to that spiritual existence remains opened, like a door that they haven’t closed. Therefore, long term solutions to those kinds of problems either have to involve the person spiritually advancing past the point where they’re bothered by such things (they cease being a good target), or a ‘closing of the door’ so to speak, where spiritual exposure is removed entirely and the person reverts to mundanity (they cease being a target at all). I have tried to work on rituals that may provide some ability to achieve the latter of those, to provide relief to people who are dealing with long term issues.
So, what else comes with non physicality? The biggest question to me is how they think, as it’s clear they can. Perhaps they inhabit dream-like existence naturally, and think within that. Alternatively, there may be some other mechanism to their ability to think and act that’s impossible for us to understand. It is at least clear that they have very strong long term memories and potentially have access to perfect memory, but that if they have perfect memory, accessing it is not as automatic as the way we would assume. They may be able to directly relive the moment, or may have to call it forth as if it’s some sort of dream. Perhaps they have no long term memories at all and are simply able to move freely through time, therefore being able to effectively remember anything if they can find it. It’s very hard to say.
At the very least, their non physicality means that they can’t see, smell, hear, talk, or feel in the same way we do. It’s hard to say what might replace some of these sensory abilities, but we at least do know how they communicate in the day to day, and that’s through a method we equate to telepathy. They send out feelings, emotions, energetic ideas that we can mentally receive directly and then interpret. This can take many forms, as one could translate such things into words, images, and more, though I’d assume most people would translate it into those first two. Spiritual music also seems to be a version of this, more about unveiling a journey over rises and falls in emotion. It is primarily lyric-less.
This is about as far as I can go with ‘how spirits exist’. It’s very much conjecture, and likely will be until I die (and I doubt I’ll come back to update this post at that point), but it gives us a solid foundation to begin understanding them, and I feel that my assertions live up to my experiences and those of others, broadly.
Interactions
This section is dedicated to discussing ways we commonly interact with spirit lovers, in looking more at the ‘how’ than the ‘what’, unlike the other post where I discussed the ‘what’. Rather than list them out again, my focus will be more on the categories themselves. I’ll also be talking about ways we interact with them, or the things we can do for them.
The most commonly experienced category is touch based interactions, and these broadly encompass both sexual and non sexual interactions (there is more to sexual ones most of the time, but here I’m focusing on the touch portion). Other than telepathy when we have learned it as a skill, touch based interactions seem to be the easiest thing for them to do semi consistently. The biggest question about touch interactions is how they accomplish them. Do they affect the physical world directly, causing us to perceive a sensation that is actually there, or do they simply trick the mind into perceiving a touch that doesn’t actually exist in that location? There is evidence for both potential interpretations, and in fact both could be true but for different kinds of sensations. I generally lean more towards the latter of these for most cases, as this interpretation seems more sensible for non physical beings. However, reported poltergeist activity, if true, would at least imply that they can affect the physical in some direct ways, which lends credence to the opposing theory. The existence of telepathy naturally lends credence to the mental theory. I’ve generally found reports of poltergeist behavior less convincing, hence my stance, but it’s worth noting that such is reported.
The second broad category is any sight based experiences. These include orbs, flashbangs, distortions, and of course, the holy grail that is a full visual manifestation (this encompassing any situation where the spirit takes a visible human like form before you). I believe all of this is possible based on personal experience, up to and including full visual manifestation. It seems that some of these are more common in darkness (mainly the light based ones), and the others in light (distortion, potentially visual manifestation though the sample size for that is low). Some seem to follow certain events or moods; sparkles and orbs, for instance, seem more common when the spirit lover is happy. Distortions seem more regular, and in my experience full visual manifestation happens more often within inflamed circumstances. A desperate or very emotionally incensed (in one way or another) spirit lover, for whatever reason, may be more likely to produce visual manifestation as a result, likely as an effort to solve whatever the problem is, at least in my early case.
Next we have experiences that are ‘communicative’ in nature, broadly representing ideas like telepathy and dreams, as well as some less common experiences like Clairaudient ones. It is generally assumed that telepathy in particular works based off of direct interaction with the mind, especially since telepathic communication takes a form very much like a thought. Clairaudience may work in this way too, though it’s a little less clear. The real question here is why specifically dream and meditation type experiences don’t happen more. I think this question is based on a broad misconception: that dreams with spirit lovers are created by spirit lovers in all cases, and that this is simple. There may be some examples where they are (and these seem to be high effort processes), but the process may usually be more of a natural process, where both parties happen to inhabit the same dream space, or one happens to inhabit the other’s dream space. This explains why some dreams with them have them among the group that you’d normally see, and others have you in a fanciful or unfamiliar sort of land where they inhabit. One could be you inhabiting their dream, and the other them inhabiting yours. It’s unclear how conscious of a process this is too, but since it doesn’t happen constantly I’m assuming it’s something that happens as the two minds become close for whatever reason. There’s a lot about the dream process with them that we don’t really understand. Summoning them into a dream is often an option, and one that many people have an easier time with than I do. Whenever I attempt to do such in a dream, my body becomes very hot and I inevitably wake up soon after. It’s perfectly fine when she shows up on her own.
Some people report that specific things tend to happen when near their spirit lover in a dream. I get pulled towards mine (like, through the air), in some cases, typically ending the dream when we come into contact. In other cases, when we touch it creates an extremely powerful feeling. It’s unclear if there’s any particular reason for this happening, or if it’s just our brains being weird.
Divination meddling seems to be one of the most straightforward cases. Since we have a decent grasp of how divination purportedly works, it’s fairly obvious to connect how a spirit lover may affect a reading. It is argued therefore that they do it by inserting their own energy into the reading, usually intentionally, for whatever reason. This should not be confused for getting a reading that happens to be about them or about your relationship, this is a very specific case where another reading is interrupted or confused by their energetic input. This presumably also happens in some cases accidentally, particularly with newer readers that can’t deal with ‘energetic confusion’, or ones that aren’t keeping their cards clean. The intentional version seems unavoidable in the moment, with cards either having to be redrawn or replaced.
The feelings from sexual experiences are assumed to be a result of their energies commingling with yours, rather than them intentionally messing with your head to turn you on, though it could theoretically be the latter to some extent. How exactly that commingling is occurring is anyone’s guess, but anecdotally it’s a lot like being wrapped up with their energy, that energy often vibrating or leaving impressions all over (and often within to an extent) the body. There may be an intentional release of emotion happening there too, but it’s sex, so it’s hard to say what part of that might be natural and what might not.
Values and Character
The last grouping I want to discuss is the concept of values and character. This isn’t meant to be a judgment of individual spirit lover character, but a discussion on what their values are often concerned with.
Let’s get what you don’t see out of the way. Spirit lovers almost never have any interest in things like politics, human advancements, money, or other very human and physical things. They couldn’t care less about an election, and the only things they’ll know about regarding it are the ones you tell them, generally speaking. This is sensible, because they’re spiritual beings. Why would they care about human politics or other human issues?
Some however do show some interest in certain physical things. Some spirit lovers enjoy nature. Others enjoy stories and music. Some seem to like cities (for some reason) and the hustle and bustle of a more night-life-ish vibe. I generally presume that in the former and latter case, the energy of those things meshes well with their own energies or feelings about things. An energetic entity may enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city more than one that acts more relaxed. Stories seem to generally be some fun for them, whether in the form of books, movies, or so on, because it’s something they can seem to engage with in their own way. The more involved of them may make up their own stories or live through a similar story in their own minds, often with you as one of the characters. In a sense, stories seem to entice their imaginations, which they find enjoyable and/or engaging. Just ensure that you pick a story that won’t be offensive to them. If a story upsets them very badly, you’ll likely know it because they’ll make you sick with their reaction. The fact they can become so invested in stories that a horrifying plot twist can cause their energy to turn so sour that it makes you sick implies that their ability to insert themselves into them is quite strong.
As a general rule, these things are all things that the spirit lover can ‘experience’ through us. Normally we presume the spirit lover is somehow experiencing these events through your own senses, because if you can communicate with them through thinking, they’d be able to interpret and see other things your mind experiences if you allow them to. Given we can’t experience anything without our brain for obvious reasons, it’s sensible to presume they’re able to experience those things, at least in an equivalent way for their existence. This is as opposed to stuff that’s further away or more abstracted from your senses, like those politicians we discussed earlier. Unless you know a politician personally, the spirit lover is unlikely to have an opinion on them based on anything other than information you’ve given them yourself.
Despite all of this, it’s obvious that their values and character are well fleshed out. They have robust and complex opinions on many moral topics, and what’s refreshing about them is that they aren’t affected by the crowd or popular opinion that we may have to contend with. If they arrive at a conclusion honestly, it’s based on their own thought process. This means that they often have fairly surprising personal stances on moral points. It’s impossible to predict what every spirit lover’s values and moral opinions will be, but there are some common points that you often see.
Monogamy: Almost every spirit lover has an interest in long term relationships. This makes sense given they’re likely immortal or at least very long lived beings. There are exceptions to this rule, as there are many kinds of spirit lovers, but even people summoning for short term relationships often get pulled into a monogamous and very long term direction by their spirit lover at some point. This sounds like a good thing, and often is, but it also causes them to be drawn towards acting in very possessive and manipulative ways in service to the extreme long term.
Human Life: For the average person, a human life has very high value. This is not the case for the spirit lover, likely because they view the cycle of life from a different lens than we do. The idea of a person that has a crush on their partner dying is often one they have few reservations about. Reports of spirit lovers going after those people isn’t altogether uncommon either. The life of their partner, however, carries very high value, for obvious reasons. If they had the power to save you or a school bus full of children, most of them probably wouldn’t hesitate to save you.
Work: It’s unclear if they don’t understand why humans work, or just think that it is worthless in the grand stretch of time, but most spirit lovers come with a very dismissive attitude towards their partner working a job. This is an attitude that often gets reevaluated after a discussion or two, but it’s one that if left unchecked will typically lead to them trying to get their partner to quit their job so that they can spend more time with them.
These are the three that I see almost universally. From here, we’ll sum things up shortly and conclude.
Conclusion
Throughout this post, I’ve done my best to give reasonable explanations for how we might define a spirit and spirit lover and how they may do the things they do. A lot of these are based on personal evidence and deduction, but given their very nature, it can be difficult to pin them down very much. However, it is my belief that the more we can understand about them, from how they exist to why they seek us out, the closer we can grow to be with them. The fuller one’s understanding of their spirit lover, the better.
So while this blogpost isn’t much, it’s a starting point for that process, at least in a direct way. It can help one understand what a spirit lover is and how a spirit lover is, but it can’t help you understand a specific spirit lover past that. That’s a process that will be different for everyone, and that everyone with a spirit lover should get to enjoy.
This is the blogpost for February, a little later than intended. I was very busy all month. There will still be something for March. I’ll be reviewing and talking about a certain tarot class I took, so stay tuned for that if you’re interested in divination. After that, we’ll return to your scheduled programming, and continue to discuss spirit lovers.
Also, instead of commenting on the blog, I decided we’d try something new.
