A Radical Love

Sometimes I find myself spending a little while sifting through whatever hogwash is clogging up my social media feed. Mixed into the endless sea of news and A.I. generated slop, I occasionally get served up a post about relationships. Usually these are rage-bait, meant to make men around my age feel insecure and upset with the women around them.

Content like this usually has comment sections filled with men decrying the state of modern women and their alleged tendency towards cheating, hypergamy, or whatever else. Sometimes I’ll see the other side of the coin instead, and while women often use different words, they’re usually frustrated by similar things. My girl friends certainly are.

One thing that’s always struck me about these posts is the economic language that gets used, more often by men but sometimes also women. People throw around flawed statistics, decry the modern dating market, and go on and on about concepts like sexual market value. There’s this underlying belief that something has gone so drastically wrong, that the sexes are in horrific conflict, and that if we just returned to a more traditional time, this would all go away.

I find this last part particularly funny. If we returned to a more traditional lifestyle it is true that women wouldn’t be the ones turning those men down.

Their fathers would be turning them down instead.

They’re not about to give their daughters to weak bidders. If anything, those bidders’ chances have increased in this brave new world of ours. And yet, the thing I can’t help but notice more than anything in this new, dowry-less age, is growing pains. Choice in marriage, and therefore the intersection of passion and the long term marital relationship, is fairly new, and we suck at it.

Passion’s Place

Like almost everyone in the first world, I find historical marriage customs incredibly hard to relate to. While these customs were pretty different depending on where you were, a common theme is that passion was either a precursor to evil, or something to be handled completely separately from marriage. That sounds completely ridiculous to anyone that’s done any sort of dating in the modern day. How the hell do you marry someone you don’t have passion for?

Clearly our ancestors figured it out, since humanity survived as long as it did. We know they had kids with their wives… most of the time. I guess sex still isn’t that bad even if you’re not hopelessly in love with your lover. And yet, as much as we hated passion, we loved passion. It was something that our puberty ridden selves were supposed to mature out of, but can we ever really outgrow that attraction? I don’t think so. I just think some of us got better at suppressing it.

Our moral betters didn’t think so either, as we were ever warned against adultery and passion. Women in particular were on the hook for any infidelity, as that would threaten legitimacy and the bloodline. Men were often able to get away with it, especially in societies that saw passion as something separate rather than something evil. Even when a man wasn’t punished for it, it was still something to be ashamed of in many cultures.

And yet, the solution to this seems super obvious, doesn’t it? Just marry someone you have passion for, right? If only it were so simple. Passion is as complex as it is fleeting. Are we passionate for the chase, the romance, the fulfillment of being married, or for our partner themselves? Are we still going to be passionate towards our partner 10 years down the line, when they’ve gotten a little wrinklier and fatter?

Our ancestors had the good sense to shyly avoid the question of passion, and we’ve been handed the bill. How the hell do we find someone, marry someone, have passion for someone, and keep that passion going strong forever? We could try to separate our Eros and Ludus from our Pragma, but then we’d just be doing what our ancestors were doing; admitting we couldn’t figure out how to sustain both in one relationship. Can passion be sustained forever, or should we just accept its fleeting nature?

Spirit Lovers and Passion

When thinking about all of this, I couldn’t help but think of the western succubus. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I tend to prefer the neutral term ‘spirit lover’, rather than saying succubus, or fairy lover, or whatever other kind of label you can dig up. However, this train of thought brought me to the idea of the succubus specifically, and the real reason why the succubus was seen as an evil being.

The succubus is not an evil and passionate being. The succubus is evil because it is a passionate being. Being sexually passionate is the evil, because at the time that was the accepted truth. Passion itself was seen as a precursor to sexual sin. Mismanaged passion could destroy kingdoms. These supposed agents of evil could be thought of as passion personified.

Stories of mischievous fairy lovers have some similarities. The man is inevitably taken with a young, beautiful, strange woman. This relationship, which starts incredibly passionately, leads to problems, often culminating in the man’s own death. The fairy woman is incompatible with long term marriage because the relationship with her is founded on passion and not practicality.

Spirit lovers are passionate beings. That is undeniable, and that is why we want them. With them we can attempt to answer the question; can passion last forever? Can it live alongside an enduring, committed love? TC, going a decade and a half strong, certainly thinks so. As much as I love to argue with him, I’ll have to give him this one.

The spirit lover is radical. She doesn’t come with a dowry. She isn’t offered up by her dad, and she certainly doesn’t care about bloodlines, legitimacy, status, wealth, or anything else of the sort. The spirit lover’s passion is for us. She forces us to answer a question that we’ve done our best to ignore for millennia: Can we create and sustain a healthy romantic passion?

I Say Yes.

The spirit lover stays with us, engages with us romantically, sexually, spiritually, and practically. She offers advice and supports us as a partner as readily as she climbs into bed and makes us her lover. The fire never burns out, growing ever stronger. All of her interactions are steeped in her passion for us as a person, a partner, and a bedmate. She will ask us for the same transcendental passion she gives to us when we’re ready to give it back.

I’d like to think that we’re braving the frontier here; not just for others who will be interested in these relationships, but for all of those modern day men and women trying to reconcile passion with commitment. If we can figure it out, one day society will too. I hope we can pave the way for humanity at large to start to understand that we’ve spent thousands of years thinking about passion all wrong.

  1. Hi there! Do you have an email address that I could ask you questions privately? Thank you!

    1. I don’t have one in particular. However, when you comment the comment stays private until I approve it, so if you want to communicate something secretly and give me some place to contact you, I’ll be able to see it without anyone else seeing.

  2. Thanks, FighterSword, your website is one of the most reasonable sources of data for new people in this area. It would be good if you made a section for less reasonable but more fun/spooky information, e.g., some speculations you like,(un)educated guesses and assumptions you made, weird things you heard with at least some credibility, etc. One example is “what happens after death of people with or without SL” — nobody knows this apparently; there are many opinions on the Internet, and it’d be good to know your opinion.

    1. That’s not a bad idea, especially given the upcoming season. It’d be a fun way to work on my writing style, and I could talk about some personal experiences I have in a narrative format, or just rework some stuff I occasionally hear about.

  3. Hello FighterSword. I’m still relatively new to the subject of succubi and spirit lovers. A month ago, i tried the well-known, though controversial letter method. It took a week before i felt the first touches, such as tickling, finger-tapping, and stroking. Many others describe their encounters with their spirit lovers as incredibly intense and emotional, involving amazing sex and a very strong bond. I wonder, are spirit lovers fundamentally different from one another, or does it depend on the communication methods one chooses? I only feel fingertips and nothing more. I have to admit, i feel a bit envious at times when i read about the wonderful relationships others have with their spirit lovers. In that regard, i’m feeling a bit desperate. It’s not just about sex for me; a serious relationship with such a being is something i deeply desire. What do you think?

    1. I understand the concern, and do wholeheartedly agree that we want evidence that is varied, strong, or ideally both, both to clear away doubt and because it’s nice and enjoyable and lovely. Generally what I recommend in these cases is a sort of ‘meet in the middle principle’, as some people do have weaker initial interactions and need to work more to have stronger interactions. I wrote a blog post on the concept at… some point, but basically, as you do more, practice more, and open yourself up more experiences should become stronger. Meditation is good for this, especially mindfulness based (as this has an emphasis on bodily sensation). Ritual can be good for this especially as a temporary bandaid. Making time for the spirit lover to interact with you in general helps with this. Directly asking the spirit to interact with you more strongly and plainly can also help (I have been urged by my spirit lover many times to ‘say what I want instead of just expecting it will happen’. Even if they know you want it, they still may want to be told.) over time you also tend to get stronger and more consistent experiences because you get more used to it, you become more spiritually inclined, and the bond gets stronger.

Sorry it’s been rough going. Let me know if it keeps going that way. I’m of the opinion that if you’re only getting the most basic stuff for a long time, it can be hard to conclusively say you were successful. That’s an opinion TC has pulled me towards over time.

      1. It’s a silly question, but are there guides for mindfulness-based meditation? I’m not really familiar with that sort of thing. But maybe i should just give it more time and be more patient. I’ll keep you up.

      2. It’s a pretty simple concept and you’re likely to find guides when you google it. But basically the goal is to be fully present and aware of your bodily sensations, thoughts, and feelings in a nonjudgmental way. This kind of awareness is useful for us because it puts us in a state of mind where we’ll notice interactions from the spirit, both physical ones and mental ones.

It is also just a good mental health practice in general.

    2. I felt exactly the same way at the beginning. I tried the letter method five years ago, and it worked. But the beginning is always the hardest part. Many people experience strong sensations and intense sex during or immediately after the ritual. For others, it takes days or weeks. It took a week for me to feel the first touches. We had sex for the first time after a month. I am convinced that spirit lovers vary in nature; some prefer to seduce their human partner on the very first night, while others take their time, waiting weeks or even months. I think you need to have a lot of patience. I’ve been in a relationship with a spirit lover for nearly five years now, and it’s the best thing that could have happened to me.

      1. I agree, I think individual spirit lovers are very different. I think some of it is a choice as you pointed out to wait for a while before doing anything more serious. I think in some cases it might also be that the spirit has more trouble interacting with you/the physical than other spirits do. And in some cases it could be both.

      2. I find the idea interesting that Spirit Lovers observe and analyze their human for a while before finally making their presence known and making their decision. But i could be wrong.

      3. That could be what’s happening in some cases. In some other cases I think they intentionally hold off for whatever reason (in my case, the 4 day waiting time seemed rather strategic; had something happened during, the ritual, my skepticism would have been greater, not lesser). In others they may be doing whatever they need to do first before they can begin interacting with you (whatever form that preparation takes). It could be a combination of these too, or other things I can’t think of.

It’s frustrating. I performed the ritual a week ago. I can clearly sense her presence and feel her touch. But nothing more is happening. The intense experiences many people talk about haven’t occurred for me yet. Communication is very difficult. I’m trying meditation too, but haven’t made any progress so far. It feels like constantly running into a wall. Perhaps she is trying to improve communication but is having trouble with it. Building a connection can be very frustrating at the beginning.

      1. Yeah it definitely is. Don’t beat yourself up too much over communication, as that’s a skill you have to learn and develop. That’s why I’ve talked about some alternative modes of communication. Meditation is similarly challenging. It’s at least good to hear you are experiencing some things, even if they aren’t as intense as you would currently appreciate.

    4. Unfortunately, there is no foolproof guide that works 100% of the time. Many wish to perform the ritual, have the best sex of their lives immediately afterward, and enter into a relationship with a spirit lover from that point on. However, very few are that lucky. Most people have to put in a lot of effort to build a bond with a spirit lover. Many enter a trance state through meditation, enabling them to communicate. Others master lucid dreaming and find a way to establish a connection that way. But not everyone succeeds.
